Saturday I went to a venue called “Word Northumberland” put on by The Spirit of the Hills writing group. It took place at the Cobourg Library about 70 kilometres away.
I had heard of the Spirit of the Hills Arts Group but not the Writer’s group. It was my new writing partner in crime who drew my attention to it and she accompanied me on the trip.
We left Campbellford just after 9:00 am to arrive in Cobourg one hour later. I most often find that the voyage to the venue is as entertaining as the outing itself and this was a good example of that.
While we have not known each other for very long, my new chum and I seem to have a lot in common and conversation was not the least bit strenuous. That along with the rolling scenery of the Northumberland Hills made our outing most pleasurable.
The room at the library was filled with writers and publishers all ready to show you there latest books as well as earlier works.
Meandering around I picked up a copy of "Hill Spirits" the latest anthology by authors from Northumberland County. The book was published by "Blue Denim Press" also from our county.
I spoke with someone from Radio Northumberland and met the organizer of the venue Susan Statham, writer and artist, who is a friend of the girl who accompanied me. I also spoke with Shane Joseph of Blue Denim Press about the ever changing way of publishing in today’s market and what he sees for the future.
We then sat down and listened to readings by several of the authors that were present at the event, each with their unique style.
10:45 Cynthia Reyes "Beloved Gardens"
10:55 Donna Wootton "Leaving Paridise"
11:05 Pat Calder "Roadblock"
11:15 Ellen Curry "Be Careful What You Think"
11:25 Eric E. Wright "Riptide"
Leaving after the morning session, we stopped for a light lunch and headed back home to Campbellford, arriving around 3:00 pm.
What did I learn?
I learned the Cobourg library has a wonderful research area for family history, where I most certainly will return.
I met several like minded people who have expanded their wings and become dedicated to their craft.
I discovered The Spirit of the Hills writer's group and may soon join.
Northumberland County has something for everyone in this area. "Seek and ye shall find."
There is always room for growth in our lives and this was a growth experience. And a pleasant one at that.
