Last Friday evening my friend was visiting from Meaford. We had spent the day out gathering blueberries and once home started to prepare the supper. Needless to say peach and blueberry cobbler were the dessert for the evening. What could be better than fresh fruit cobbler with whipped cream.
Our country home is just across the road from a farmer who has beef cattle. They look so peaceful out in the pasture. Grazing along in the field it is often fun to watch them move from place to place.

Just as we began our dessert, we looked out the window to the south or our home and there were the cows in the soy field below our property and they were headed our way.
My husband and my friend hotfooted it out of the house to chase them home while I tried to call the neighbour to let him know the cows were loose.
No one home, so I tried several other farmers in the area. No luck their either. Everyone was away. I went outside to see what could be done at this point and realized that while Michel had managed to get them back across the road, without supervision they would be right back in harms way. We know nothing about electric fencing and how to find let alone fix breaches in it.

What to do now. If we did not stay with them they would be back on the road and by this time dusk was fast approaching. I went back in the house and called emergency services who transferred me to the OPP division in our town.
I was told they would send someone out to deal with it as soon as possible. Within 15 minutes the car was dispatched and a young officer was there to help us. She stayed there and within a few more minutes a second officer came to help her.

I remembered the name of a friend of the neighbour's and gave him a call. He arrived in short order and herded the cattle back with his truck. He then checked to find the break in the line. Our work was done so back to the house to enjoy that cobbler even if it was cold. The events of the evening certainly made for good conversation.
What excitement for a Friday night!
