The party
Before Eric left, I mentioned he took us around the lake for a scenic tour, but I did not mention that he also prepared the sauna (the original kind with logs and rocks),for anyone who might be so inclined. Eric is after all a Finn. Then he took off and left us to our own devices.
At one point we were missing a body, who it turned out just needed a little "quiet time" before we started supper. Tess had prepared a lasagne with garlic bread and for dessert a rhubarb fool. Copious amounts of wine were consumed and the conversation became more personal as it usually does. It's amazing what one learns at these functions. We are however family and we do respect each other's privacy.
Much fun was had and at about 10:30pm we all retired for the night. Again, you must realize that we are not as young as we once were, so that extra zzz's are needed.
Up and at 'em before 6 am we were ready for the day. The siting of a bear scat at the end of the driveway made me realize that we were far from civilization. However on my walk with my namesake niece the only thing that ate me alive were the mosquitos. Cool damp weather was just what they needed, and I forgot to use my bug dope.
Also as previously mentioned, we did a tour of the area and saw the sites before returning. Kim and Tess hotfooted it to the sauna in the afternoon and then partook in a dip in the lake. Weather being what it was the rest of us just chatted, catching up on years gone by.
A neighbour dropped by and we had a nice visit. Then Robin served he appetizers, rich and delicious as always. Asiago pinwheels.
The barbecue was lit and the prime rib was set on to cook. I have never barbecued a prime rib roast and after tasting this one it will definitely be part of my cooking repertoire.
After the meal we all remained at the table and played a game where we chose an old photo of someone else in the group and told a story of what we thought was going on. There were many silly tales told and lots of laughs. This lead to more personal talk and more laughs that women of a certain age share. Some of the banter was side splitting.
Amazing how fast the time flew. We all retired about 11pm as the next day was going home for all of us.
Robin and I were the first to leave the next morning as we had the longest drive. Hugs and kisses abounded and a certain sadness as we left, knowing it would be a long time and possibly never before we did this again. All I can say is I hope we do. Thank-you ladies for being there and thanks to Tess for hosting.
*For "the girls": I am working on a story just for us which I will let you know about when it happens. It may take me awhile. Want it to be special as was the weekend.
