As I look out over the fields below us, I see a familiar sight but one that makes me melancholic. Farmers harvesting their crops before the onset of winter.
All but a few late bloomers are still in the flower beds and most of my vegetable garden has been put to bed for the winter. One of the few tasks left is to harvest some of the root vegetables and plant the garlic and shallots for next year.
The nights are getting colder and there will soon be a killing frost before the snow arrives.
As I get up for my morning walk, I leave in darkness. It is only partway through the walk that my friend and I get to see some magnificent sunrises. I keep telling myself I must remember to bring a camera.
We have probably cut the grass for the last time this season and will have to prepare the lawnmowers for their winter resting place, and in turn prepare the winter tools for their jobs to come.
Now is the time for winter meals. The kind that stick to your ribs and comfort you during the long dark evenings.
For that I thought I would share one of our first winter suppers. Alsatian Stuffed Cabbage. We had it the other day and thoroughly enjoyed it.
