In the beginning
Gilbert Harris Ketcheson was born in the Township of Sidney, County of Hastings, Ontario October 19th 1815. He was the son of Thomas Ketcheson and Amanda Bloford. He was the eldest of their 10 children.
Gilbert was the original homesteader for Lot 22, Concession V, Township of Seymour, County of Northumberland just north of the hamlet of Menie.
However is must be noted that the original 200 acres was bought from the Crown by a Mr. Browne. The deed of sale was 1820. It would appear that he never lived on the land.
As well as the 200 acres he owned here, he also had another 100 acres diagonally across from the original homestead. at Lot VI Concession 23.
Gilbert homesteaded the land in or around 1837.
Gilbert married Sarah Ann Ostrom b. February 17th 1818, also from Hastings. She was the daughter of Daniel Ostrom and Isabel Crysdale.
They were married at Burnbrae, just north of Menie June 22nd 1841.
Gilbert and Sarah would have one child, Martha Maria born in 1842. Sarah would die when Martha was just an infant in December of the following year.
There is strong evidence that the couples families were neighbours in Hastings as the Ketcheson name shows up as a second name for at least one of the Ostroms.
Sarah was buried in the Belleville Cemetery, Hastings County. Their daughter was sent to live with her aunts Martha Ostrom and Maria Herchimer, in Belleville after the death of Sarah. Maria who would in turn adopt her. These aunts seem to be her namesakes. Unfortunately like her mother Sarah, Martha would not to live a long life. She died in 1857 at age 15.
This is my connection to Menie and the homestead. However I would not know that until after we had moved onto the property.
Gilbert remarried in 1845 to Martha Bowen b. 1833 and went on to have 9 or possibly 10 children over the next 20 years.
